The benefits of seeing a therapist

Therapy as part of taking care of our mental well-being is becoming more and more popular,

and we’re not mad about it!

Seeing a therapist can offer numerous benefits for people who are dealing with challenges or mental health issues, or are seeking personal growth and self-awareness.

Some of the key benefits include:

Emotional support

Therapists provide a safe and non-judgmental space for you to share thoughts, feelings and concerns you might not want to share with others. This emotional support can be invaluable, especially during difficult times.

Improved mental health

Therapy can be a great tool to manage mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, PTSD or trauma by using evidence-based techniques to address specific issues and help you develop coping strategies.

Learning to set boundaries

Setting healthy boundaries is essential to a calmer, more fulfilled life. A therapist can help you develop this skill and implement it in your day-to-day.

Increased self-awareness

Gain deeper insights into your thoughts, emotions, behaviours, and patterns. This self-awareness is an important step to personal growth, improved decision-making, a higher sense of fulfillment in your job and better relationships.

Coping skills

Therapists teach practical coping skills and strategies to help you deal with stress, trauma, anger, grief and other challenges. These skills can empower you to navigate difficulties more effectively.

Healthy relationships

Develop better communication skills to promote healthier relationships with partners, family members, friends and colleagues. This can also help you set boundaries and develop more fulfilling connections.

Problem-solving

Identify and address underlying issues that contribute to difficulties you're facing. By exploring these issues in a supportive environment, you can develop effective problem-solving skills and make positive changes.

Increased resilience

Therapy can help build resilience, enabling you to adapt to change and bounce back from setbacks quicker.

Behavioural changes

Learn to identify and adjust unhealthy behaviors or thought patterns that may be hindering your personal or professional life. This can lead to lasting behavioral changes and improved overall happiness.

Overall satisfaction

Ultimately, therapy can contribute to a greater sense of fulfillment, meaning, and satisfaction in life. By addressing mental health concerns and personal challenges, you can work towards achieving your goals and living a life that’s true to who you are and what you need.

We encourage you to find a therapist you feel comfortable with and who understands you and your needs.
In Australia, you can get up to 10 individual or group therapy sessions per calendar year. This is accessible to anyone who has Medicare - have a chat with your GP to get a referral and some recommendations to get you started.

Of course it's important to remember that the benefits of therapy vary depending on the individual, unique circumstances, and the therapeutic approach. But we don’t think you can ever go wrong with trying - see where the journey takes you!

If you feel like it, take a look at our selection of therapist-developed products. We love the Guided Therapy Journal to use with your therapist to prepare for sessions, as well as reflect on them.

Remember, if you’re in crisis you can contact Lifeline Australia on 13 11 44 for 24-hour support. You're never alone.
